.DLL File Type
File extension: DLL or .dll
Author of the .dll file extension: Various
Category: Support file
Programs that use the .dll file type: Various
Explanation of .dll file extensions:
The .dll file extension stands for Dynamic Link Library. Think of it as a library filled with individual programs each having its own purpose. When a software developer needs to incorporate a certain process into the program he is developing, it's simpler to include a DLL rather than writing the code from scratch. For example, many programs need to be able to print. Instead of coming up with their own code for this, they use an existing DLL.
Typical problems associated with the .dll file extension:
One of the most common problems with .dll files is when one goes missing. This happens all the time when users uninstall programs along with all of their "unnecessary" dlls. While the program prompts you to remove unneeded dlls, other programs may need them. When you use the other program it will malfunction because the required .dll file has been deleted.
Another common .dll problem occurs when the Windows registry contains invalid instructions or has had references to .dll files removed by spyware or other processes.
Solutions/Recommendations:
Reinstalling the program that you previously uninstalled is the easiest way to resolve missing .dll files. Once reinstalled, you can uninstall it again, except this time don't delete the files that the uninstall program says are no longer needed.
If you no longer have the original file that you had previously uninstalled, check the manufacturer's website to see if you can download a fresh copy of the missing .dll file. Some programs, such as Microsoft Office applications, come with built-in repair tools that will scan the program files and replace any missing files with new copies.
Run a registry cleaner to resolve many common .dll errors.
